Android Features – Testing Notes

WireGuard Protocol

WireGuard is the default protocol on Android. Connection time was consistently under 2 seconds in tests. CPU usage under WireGuard is significantly lower than OpenVPN, resulting in measurably lower battery consumption over extended sessions.

Individual applications can be excluded from the VPN tunnel. Banking apps, local delivery services, or streaming apps that block VPN connections can be routed directly while other traffic remains protected.

Field Testing

Android Network Behavior – Extended Observations

Across extended testing on LTE and 5G networks, Proton VPN's Android client maintained consistent tunnel integrity during network transitions. Moving between Wi-Fi and cellular triggered automatic reconnection; in all test cases, the tunnel was re-established within 2 seconds. No traffic was observed passing outside the tunnel during these transitions when Always-On VPN was active.

One distinction from the Windows client: the Android version supports only per-application split tunneling, not address-based or subnet routing. Users who require subnet-level traffic control will need to rely on the Windows or Linux client for that functionality. The map view, while visually polished, performs less smoothly on older Android hardware – suggesting the interface is optimised for mid-range and flagship devices.
