Does Proton VPN work on iPhone? Is Proton VPN safe on iOS? The iOS version supports both iPhone and iPad. Testing was conducted on iOS 17 across multiple Apple devices to assess speed, privacy, and usability with concrete data.

iOS Features & Platform Constraints

WireGuard on iOS

Unlike many VPN providers that fall back to IKEv2 on Apple devices, Proton VPN uses WireGuard natively. Connection times and throughput were measurably better than IKEv2 in comparative testing.

A kill switch is available on iOS. The implementation differs from desktop due to Apple platform constraints – brief traffic may pass during VPN reconnection. This is an iOS-wide behavior, not specific to Proton VPN.

NetShield

DNS-level ad and tracker blocking was confirmed operational across Safari and third-party browsers. In-app advertising within native applications may partially bypass DNS-level filtering depending on the app's implementation.

iOS Network Behavior – Extended Observations

Apple's NetworkExtension framework, which all iOS VPN applications must use, introduces constraints on reconnection behavior that result in occasional brief traffic gaps during transitions between Wi-Fi and cellular. This behavior was consistently observed across all iOS test devices and is not specific to Proton VPN – it affects every VPN application on the platform regardless of vendor.

One additional capability confirmed during testing: the iOS application integrates with Siri Shortcuts, allowing connection and disconnection to be triggered via voice commands or iOS automation rules. In terms of memory usage, the iOS client demonstrated a lighter footprint than the Android version under equivalent connection load – attributable to iOS's stricter process management rather than any architectural difference between the two clients.
